ENTERTAINED BY THE V.M.C.A.

Opportunity was taken by the members of the' Y.M.O.A. of George Hackenschmidt aud his company's visit to Masterton yesterday by invitiug tham to dinner at the rooms in Uhurch-street, and thus extending to them a cordial welcome to tho town. The Rev. C. E. Porter presided over a large attendance, an apology for absence being received from the Mayor.

Mr Porter stated that he wished just to extend a few words of welcome to Mr Hackeuschmidt aud his friends, and that the V.M.C. A. members appreciated the presence of these geutlemeu at their table. The speaker said that a person should not only care for his soul aud brain, but should work for the development of the body. Mr Hackeuschmidt was a splendid example of what could be done by physical culture. Mr Porter coucluded by extonding to Mr Hackenschmidt, on behalf of the V.M.C.A. members, a hearty welcome to Mastertou.

Mr Hackeuschmidt, who was received with loud applause, regretted that he was not a speaker, but he thanked those present for the welcome they Had extended to him, and stated that he would carry away with him kindly romembrauces of Mastorton aud its people.

Mr Guuuer Moir also expressed his appreciation of the welcome extended to them.

Mr Jarrett, in a few words, stated that he thought the presence of such gentlemen as the guests ought to encourage young men to try to develop themselves physically. In following up the career of Mr Hackenschmidt, the speaker had come to the conclusion that he was a man in every sense of the word, as wore also Mr Gunner Moir and Mr Bain.

Mr Alt'. Snowball proposed the toast of the guests, to which those present responded in a very enthusiastic mauner.
