At last! Trugniui has actually won a. race. It was at tho Gisborue meeting ou Thursday, where she carried top weight and defeated three others. The Merriwee mare dad not won a race for close ou two years, but during that time she must have run close on twenty seconds. Determined to break tho unlucky sequence, trainer J. W. Lowe selected the Gisborue meeting as the most likely place to accomplish his desire. J. McGombe has altered his mind as to taking up his residence at Trentham, and removed his team to Wingatui, Dunediu, last week. Mr F. H. Pyue. chairman of the Canterbury Jockey Club, contemplates taking a trip to England in tho near future. The Hutt-trained Irauui won the principal handicap at Gisborue on Wednesday. There were only two other starters, Dardanus (second) and Bally heigh (third). Owners and trainers should bear in mind that ou Ist March the new rule relating to jockey's colours will coiuq into force. The rule provides that any person who shall at any meeting whore tho totalisator is used run :i horso in colours other than those notified in the Official Calendar as registered in his name shall pay to tho club a line of one sovereign for every start. Tho Waugauui Cup meeting will be the first held after tho new rnle comes into operation. Gold Lace, the winner of tho Stewards 5 Handicap last November, maybe given a chance to earn distinction in Australia later in the year. Tho Hon. J. D. Orniond's 'chaser Audax is again in work after a spell, which was necessitated through unsoundness. Mr G. D. Greenwood lias for some lime past been negotiating I'oi , the purchase of the yearling coJt by Mar-tian—-Greok Maid, and last woek the sale was effected. Tho prico is understood to have been live hundred guineas, with certain contingencies. Castiglione, who at one time carried the buff and black jacket of Sir William Russell, is now doing duty iv tho shafts of a cab. The owner of Artillerie states that thore is little likelihood of her being seen on tho racing track until the autumn. Bnlly Shannon has passed into the hands of a patron of T. Ross' stable, and the threo-year-oid sou of Merriwoo and Tho Shannon will in future be trained at Tauherenikau. Mr R. W. Paterson has disposed of Miscast, and in future the Birkenliead colt will run in the nomination of a Canterbury sportsman. Sixty guineas changed hands over the deal. The O. J.C. stewards fined R. Hatch, the rider of Outlauder, £5 for alleged interference with Genius during the running of the Triai Stakes at Riccarton on Thursday. The Hawera-traiued Waiari, who i belongs to the Maori sportsman, Mr Tβ Hikaka, is showing good form at Takapuua. On the opening day he fairly romped home iv the Zealaudia Handicap, beating a field of ten, while ou Wednesday, with a rise of 14.1b, which brought his impost up to Bst 81b, he annexed tho Anniversary Handicap in the easiest possible fashion. Waiari is a sou of the game little St. Paul out of Thirlmere, a mare by Tim Whiftler from Barbarma, by Barbarian. He won the Egmout Hack Produce Stakes last season. Mr G. P. Donnelly's Gold Thread, who claims an engagement in the V.R.C. Newmarket Handicap, is to be sent over to Australia. The chestnut daughter of Gold Reef will go into F. McGrath's stable. The Auckland horseman, Hector Gray, continues in the lead in the list of winning jockeys. Gray, up to the present, had ridden 41 winners (including a dead heat), whilst lie has been in second place on 19 occasions, and third 2S times. A. Oliver and W. Young are next ou the list, having piloted 24 winners each. Messrs Cork and Holi'eins have disposed of Molocli to a patron of W. Davies' stable. The Mauser gelding will probably be put to the jumping game.
Machine Gun was credited with his first winner on the 2.2ud of last mouth, when Ills two-year-old daughter, Lady Meg, won the Nursery Handicap from a big field at the A. J.O. Anniversary meeting. Lancaster, another New Zealand-bred horse, sired Fillo Fogi. the winner of the principal race—the Challenge Stakes. Laucaster is a full-brother to Siege Gun.
Genullin is prospering capitally in his preparation at Hawera. reports "Observer." His near foreleg looks thick and filled about the tendon, but his trainer expresses every confidence of the brown son of Lochiel continuing to stand up to his work.
Miss Mischief is still up at Auckland. She will rejoin Mason's team at Wamrauui next month.
North East, who has not raced since his accident at Riccartou in November, will probably make his reappearance at the Egmout meeting next week, Mr Morse has given the son of Euroclydon !).0, top-weight, iv the Flyiusf Handicap.
The latest two-year-old to earn distinction is Wenouah, who won the Calliope Handicap at tfie Takapuna meeting on Saturday, and the Hobsou Handicap on Wednesday. She is one of the first batch sired by iv his first season. Wenouah, it is interesting to note, traces on the dam's side to the same family as that which gave the turf Elevation, Gravitation and Provocation. The following are the leading lines of Weuouah's pedigree:—Sire: Spalpeen, by Gossoon (son of Galopiu) from Windmill, by Goldsborough (son of Fireworks). Dam : Waimaugu, by Explosion (son of Cuirassier), from Stepfast, by St. Hippo (son of St. Leger) from Stepfeldt, by Nordeufeldt (sou of Musket).
Some good sports are occasionally to be found among the clergy, and that Victoria is not without them is gathered from a recent happening. Rev. Father Lynch has been elected president of the Warracknabeal St.
Patrick's Turf Olub, in succession to Father O'Brien.

Good reports como from Hastings way of the proficiency shown by The Rand in his schooling over the hurdles. Tlio neai approach of the autumn racing campaign in Australia is suggested by the appearance of weights for the Newmarket Handicap. Maltiue was given top-weight, 9.11, but ■was immediately withdrawn. This leaves Farsee at the head of the handicap, with 9.9, Pink 'Un coming uext with 9.0. Several other New Zealaucibred horses are engaged, aud they have been treated as follows :—Annapolis 8.13, Korlie 8.9, Motoa 8.2, Gold Thread 7.13. Nganruhoe 7.10, Celerity 7.8, Don Hannibal 7.G. Seaton Dale 7.5, Wai-Ila (5.13, Saltaie G. 13, Iv the Australian Cup, Alawa holds the position of top-weight with 9.12. Annapolis has been awarded 8. 7, Kcrlie 8.5, aud Delaware (5.11. Mr T. Ray's Merrie Laud is making a good recovery from the mishap he met with at Tanherenikau on New Year's Day, aud he will shortly rejoin the active brigade at Taratahi.
