ST. MATTHEW'S BUILDING FUND.
.Q. A GENEROUS OFFER
Allusiou was made by the Rev. H. Watson, at the Garden Fete last evening, to the need of the parish for a larger aud more substantial church. The vestry had had the matter under consideration, and had estimated that the total cost of the church and the necessary buildings for Sunday School and Club and other parish organisations, would be £7000. Of this sum £600 had been raised during the past year, and some £200 more promised, while he was very pleased to be iv a position to announce that a generou parishioner had promised a donation of £1000 on the condition that further aud strenuous efforts were made by the parish (cheers). Coutinuiug, he stated he saw no reason why the fund should not by the end of the year reach £2000, apart from the offer mentioned. It meant sacrifice, of course, but anything that did not mean sacrifice was hardly worth doing. The church, he concluded, ought to be the finest building in the town, more imposing, and more beautifully furnished than any other, and he hoped soon to see such a building erected in Masterton.
