The National Geographical Society of the Uuited States has received, with acclamation, aud referred to its Finance aud Research Committee, Commander Peary's proposal on behalf of the Arctic Club of America for a new Autartic expedition.
The Arctic Club will contribute the steamship Roosevelt, which Peary used on his recent successful expedition to the North Pole, conditional upon the society granting 50,000 dollars towards the cost or the expediand on both iustitatious shanug the balance of the expenses.
Commander Peary has suggested that the expedition should reach the coast of the Antarctic Continent iv March of 1911 at a poiut directly opposite to the base to be established by Captain Scott's party. The American aud British camps would be some 2000 miles apart.
It is calculated that the Soutli Pole should be reached by the Americans at tho end of December.
The famous explorer will be unable to conduct the expedition personally, because the sledge work—of which much will have to be done—will require so much physical exertion as to make it imperative that the actual direction of operations should be iv the hands of a younger ana stronger man.
