The victims of the e.-plosiou in the Colorado Coal aud Iron Company's mine were slaves aud Italians and Hungarians. The shaft was hopelessly shattered, Tlie first rescuers wore oxygen helmets aud penetrated n short distance, but became exhausted. Twenty-four bodies brought to the surface were so charred as to be beyond identification. The only survivor was found beneath a quantity of earth aud timber.
