Two petitions iv bankruptcy were filed iv the Masfcertou district duriug the past month, oue from Oartertou aud oue iv Masterton. There were uone for the previous mouth.

During the mouth of October rain was registered on fifteen days iv Mastertou. The total for the month was 2.1)0 iuches, the maximum fall being 1)0 poims on the sth of the month. The record for October of last year was 2. 75 inches
Amougst the successful applicants iv the ballot for sections iv the Hunia Survey District, between Raurimu aud Kakalii, ou the ftljtiu Trunk Line, were Francis B. Haughey, of Mastertou, who drew a 70-acre allotment, aud Cliristiau Setou, of Gladstone, 100 acres.
It may, perhaps, be takeu as au indication of the better times that are approachiug that duriug the past month there has beeu a decided improvement in the sawmilliug industry throughout the Masterton district. The mills have been kept fairly busy turuiiig out orders, aud the building trade ought likewise to show signs of improvement.
The weather since the opening of the season has not beeu as favourable as local auglers could desire. Despite this, however, a number of really good catches have been made, the limit haviug beeu reached fairly often, and it is stated that fish iv the Wairarapa are ou the whole very plentiful.
Bright srinshine was registered iv Mastertou ou twenty-four days duriug the mouth of October. The total number of hours iv which the sun shone brightly during the month was 195, giving a daily average of 6 hours 17 minutes. The maximum record was 12 hours 35 minutes ou the 28th of the mouth. The record for October, 1908, was 191 hours.
At Kuox Church, last evening, there was a very good congregation, aud the Rev. A. T. Thompson, wiio occupied the pulpit, preached au earnest sermou from the text, "Who art Thou?" During the offertory Mr F. W. G. McLeod played as a cornet solo "The Lost Chord," with skilful and sympathetic accompaniment on the organ by Mr Purcell Webb. The item was keenly enjoyed by those present. Mr Webb also played, as a voluntary, the well-known selection, "Come Unto Me," from' Handel's "Messiah." : -''"
The entries received for the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Show this year show an increase Of 204 over those of last year's Show.—Association.
A pathetic case is related iv connection with the delay-of the steamer Waratah. a lady, whose husband and all her children are passengers, has gone out of her mind owing to the suspense she has endured.
The early crops of potatoes at Lansdowne are looking well. In Mr Gaisley's garden they are to be seen in bloom and almost ready for digging, and Mr W. Bennett, now in his 87th year, has been able to raise a good crop of early potatoes at Tapia.
The Health Officer at Dunedin reports 372 vaccinations for the September quarter, against 102 for the corresponding period of 1908. Exemptions totalled 70, as against 25 for the corresponding quarter of last year.
An information lias been laid against Charles Gurote for using obscene language and insulting language to a Justice of the Peace. He is also to be charged with plying a vehicle for hire without a license.
Enquiry at the office of Mr W. M. Easthope, registrar, elicits the fact that during the month of October there were seventeen births, four marriages aud six deaths within the Mastertou district.
British aud Australian mails which left Sydney last Wednesday by the Victoria for Auckland arrived at the latter port at 1 p.m. yesterday. The Southern portion of the mail left Auckland by the Main Truuk express at 9.16 o'clock last evening, aud is due at Mastertou this evening.
A meeting for the purpose of forming a Cricket Club at Opaki will be held in the Miki Miki School on Tuesday, 2nd inst., at 8 p.m. sharp; also to make arrangements for a match with the Mount Bruce Club tor Saturday next.
The body of a man was found in the harbour uuder the Rattray-st. wharf, Dunedin, ou Saturday. Papers on the body mdicate that deceased was Lawrence O'Brien, a fireman and greaser, aged thirty-two, who had served in the Union Company's boats since 1904, aud discharged from the Waitemataon September 9th.
The Labour Conference concluded in Wellington ou Safcuiclay. The Conference resolved to advise the Unions interested to hold a conference and arrange for obtaining one award for the whole of the building trade. A resolution was passed protesting against the exemption of Harbour Boards from provisions of the Conciliation and Arbitration Act. The conference affirmed the desirability of establishing a Dominion Labour paper.
The Governor arrived iv Blenheim ou Saturday night for the Marlborough Jubilee celebrations. About forty members of Parliament went across to Picton in the Tutauekai. They visited Ship Cove en route aud inspected the site of the proposed Cook Monument. Special sermous were preached in all the churches yesterday. Archbishop Redwood being one of the preachers, aud a public thauksgiving service was held in the Town Hall in the atteruoou.
A large number of sheep are being sent from Masterton to compete at the forthcoming Palmerston Show. There is a strong feeling gaining ground that the two A. and P. Associations can be mutually helpful and the committees are making every effort to assist one another. This is surely a step in the right direction auri should result in a material increase both in the number and quality of the exhibits at the respective shows.
The fact that a young horse is not always to be handled with impunity was amply demonstrated to a resident of Mastertou yesterday. The animal was being saddled, when it suddenly swerved rouud and lashed out, catching him on the thigh aud side. He was fortunately carrying a watch in iiis vest pocket, aud this caught the full forcu of oue of the hoofs, otherwise he might have been seriously injured. As it was, he received a number of severe bruises, while his watch was hopelessly ruined.
The services at the Methodist Church yesterday were conducted in the morning and evening by the Rev. (J. E. Porter. For his address to the children Mr Porter took for his text that of "Hiddeu Treasure," while the text for his address to the adults was takeu from Matthew xix. 20. "What Lack I Yet." In the eveuiug his subject was, "Reasons Why Men Do Mot Become Christians," aud he delivered au eloquent aud excellent address. The anthem "Salvation" was rendered by the choir, and a solo, "The Lord is My Shepherd," was sung by Miss Prentice.
There have beeu rather more enquiries after work at local registry offices during the past month than for the month previous, a face which is attributed largely to the influx of shearers, the Masterton district being well known as a shearing district. The demand for'skilled labour has not been large, nor have enquiries been beyond the ordinary. Geuerally speaking, there appears to be sufficient work going to keep the available men employed. Unskilled labour has not been iv great demand, although enquiries for milkers have been fairly numerous, aud in some cases difficulty has been found in securing them.
A Shakespeare evening is being given on Friday next by some members of Kuox Youug People's Association, in Kuox Hall. This is the third year that they have arranged a Shakespeare evening. On former occasions they have been very successful, aud the Hall has been taxed to its utmost to accommodate the audience. This year fourteen scenes are being taken from "As You Like It," and thirteen characters, five ladies and eight men, will be represented. Most of the scenes take place in the forest of Arden, aud a very pleasing representation of this should be the result of the natural scenery that it is proposed to use.
An extraordinary case of robbery with violence occurred iv Auckland on Friday night. A lady, who came from Fiji to undergo a serious operation, was placed in a cab in Queenstreet by a doctor, who instructed the man who jumped on the box aud assumed the driver's seat to drive the lady to a private hospital. The driver, instead of taking the lady there drove iv the direction of Onehuuga. The lady protested to tne man that she was being carried beyond her destination, whereupon, she alleges, lie left his seat,' struck her aud stole her gold rings, jewellery aud a considerable sum of money. The doctor subsequently proceeded to the private hospital to see his patient. Finding she was not there he communicated with the police. Six constables were detailed to search for the lady. She was found by the Ouehunga police and sent to the private hospital. She was suffering considerably from shock. The cab was found in Queen-street again, but the driver had disappeared." The real owner, it is stated, was having his tea when a man known to the police assumed the role of driver. So far he has not been arrested.
A notice of dissolution of partnership between Mr F. W. G. McLeod and Mr R. J. Youug is published in another column. The business has been taken over by Mr Young, and will still be carried on by him under the style of MoLeod and Young.
The Rev. Nicholas Manowitch, of the, Greek Orthodox Church, *vho is at present on a tour of the Dominion in the interests of that denomination, conducted a, communion service to a small gathering of adherents of the church ,at St. Peter's schoolroom, Wellington, yesterday morning. The service was conducted in Greek and English, the lessons being read in the Greek, while the sermon was in English. In the afternoon, Mr Manowitch visited the homes of the members of his congregation. In the evening he attended divine service at St. Peter's Church (Anglican). Mr Manowitch was to leave for Auckland by the Main Trunk express to-day, and he will be in Wellington again in January T'/ie fourteenth of that month is one of the festival days of the Church, and there is expected to be a large gathering of members from a considerable distance around Wellington. During the sale at Mr P. Hamill's a large number of remnants have accumulated, and in order to clear these no reasonable offer will be refused. During the next few days the oddments that have been taken "from every department will be thrown on the counters, and those in search, of bargains should call early and secure a good selection.
