AGRICULTURAL DEPARTMENT.

THE RE-ORGANISATION SCHEME.

IMPORTANT CHANGES

Immediate effect will be given to the re-organisation scheme of the Department of Agriculture, Commerce and Tourists, now completed, under the Government's new proposals. All the existing divisions of the Department of Agriculture are abolished, and the new department is to be divided as follows:—The head office; live stock and meat division ; orchards, gardens, and apiaries division; dairy produce division; commerce a and tourists division.

District agencies are to be established at Auckland, Napier, Wanganui, Wellington, Ohnstchurch, Dunedin, Invercargill.

The whole of the work and all the officers of the department are to be under the control of the Secretary of Agriculture, Commerce and Tourists.

The head office comprises the following sections:—General section, Mr W. C. Robinson, acting chief clerk; accounts, Mr J. W. Bell, accountant; publications, Mr G. Bissett, editor; biology, Mr A. H. Cockayne, biologist.

The directors of the divisions are: —Mr C. J. Reakes, M.R.C.V.S., director of the live stock and meat division. Mr Reakes will also hold the position of chief inspector of stock, but will only use the latter designation when performing any statutory function of that office. Mr E. Clifton, director of the fields and experimental farms division. Mr T. W. Kirk, director of the orchards, gardens and apiaries division. Mr D. Caddie, director of the dairy produce division. Mr C. R. O. Robiesou, director of the commerce and tourists division. The directors of tho divisions shall, subject to the secretary's direction, manage their divisions generally, and administer the legislation assigned to them. Tho Live Stock and Meat Division (Mr Reakes) will deal with the Stock Act, Dairy Industry Act (in so far as it refers to dairies other than those supplying factories, and to the health of live stock on any dairy farm), Slaughtering and inspection Act, Products Export Act (so far as it refers to poultry and meat), Veterinary Laboratory (with farm attached), instruction regarding poultry and live stock generally.

The Fields and Experimental Farms Division (Mr Clifton) will deal with the Rabbit Nuisance, Noxious Weeds, Injurious Birds, Fertilisers, Products, Export (so far as it refers to hemp), and Orchard and Garden Diseases (fields and pastures) Acts, grain and hemp grading aud hemp mill instruction.

The Orchards, Gardens and Apiaries Division (Mr Kirk) will deaf with the Orchard and Garden Diseases (excepting in so far as it relates to fields and pastures), Apiaries and Products Export (so far as it relates to fruit, honey, or hops) Acts, and fruit and vegetables generally.

The Dairy Produce Division (Mr Cudclie) will administer the Dairy industry Act (in so far as it relates to dairies supplying factories, and excepting in so far as it relates to the health of live-stock); Margarine kot : milk and dairy produce, generally; inspection of dairy farms supplying factories (live stock on such farms to be inspected for disease by the Livestock and Meat Division); instruction in milk production; instruction in and inspection at dairy factories; dairy-produce grading. The staff will be: The Director, Assistant. Director, dairy instructors, and dairy produce graders. The District Agencies and District Agents are as follows: Auckland, District Agent at Auckland; Hawke's Bay. at Napier, Tarauaki-Manawatu, at Waugamn; Wei liugton-Marlboroxigh-Nelson, at Wellington; Canterbury-Westland, ac Christchurch ; North Otago, at Dunedin; Southland, at Invercargill. The District Agencies will deal with correspondence (including typewriting), lettei-booKs, general clerical work, special registers, etc. The staff will consist of the District Agents and clerks.
