LORD TWEEDMOUTH. Press Association— Electric Telegraph—Copvricht. (Receired LuM Xight, at 10.41 p.m.) LONDON, Yesterday. The death has occurred of Lord Tweedmouth, late Lord President of The Couucil. His end caiiie peacefully at Dublin. Lord Tweedmouth, wJio had just entered upon his sixty-first year, was appointed Chief Liberal Whip and Parliamentary Secretary to the j Treasury in the Government of 181)2----jffkj>o. He was then the Hon. Edward •Boiajoribauks. He was made Lord Privy Seal and Chaucellor of the Duchy of Lancaster iv ISO 4. He entered the House of Commons as M.P. for Berwick in ISSO.and became Comptroller to the Household iv 188i">. He more than once startled the Hotise by his intimate knowledge of small arms, and it is said that lie once tilled the Liberal Whip's office with a collection of rifles that caused a serious fright to a peace-loving party. His only desire, however, was to demonstrate the efficiency of the new magazine rifle. He was a keen politician, and was one of the mainstays of the Liberal party in the House of Lords. He was appointed to the office of First Lord of the Admiralty in December, 1905. Early last year a sensation was caused by the publication of correspondence with the Kaiser, which a section of the press made much of, at Lord Tweedmouth's expense. When the Cabinet was reformed, after Sir Henry CampbellBannertuan's oeath, in April, 190S, Lord Tweedmouth was removed to the less onerous post of Lord President of the Council, but owing to failing health he resigned in the following jjj||3eptember. tPJ The late Lord is succeeded by his son, Captain the Hou. Dudley Churchill Majoribauks, D.S. 0., M.V.0., Military Secretary to the Earl of Selborne, High Commissioner of South Africa. He served with distinction in the Boer war.
