OBITUARY.

ARCHBISHOP OF SYDNEY

Press Association —Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received This Morning at 12.55 a.m.) SYDNEY, Last Night. Dr Saumarez Smith, Anglican Archbishop of Sydney, died to-day.

The late Right Rev. William Saumarez Smith, D.D., Archbishop of Sydney, Metropolitan of New South Wales, and Primate of Australia aud Tasmania, was suddenly seized by cerebral hemorrhage ou the afternoon of April Stn. His Grace lost all power of speech, his right side was completely paralysed, aud he was iv a semi-conscious condition. The deceased Archbishop was tho sou of the Rev. William Snowden Smith, Prebendary of Chichester. He was boru at St. Helier's in 1830. Iv 1870 he married the daughter of the Rev. lewis Deedos, rector of Bramiield, aud she died in 181)0, ou the eve of her departure for New South Wales. He was educated at Marlborough College aud Trinity College, Cambridge, of which he was Scholar, aud became Fellow in 18150. He graduated B. A. in 1858, taking a first-class in classics and theology; M.A. in 18(52, B.D. in 1871, aud iv 188 V) ho received the degree of D.D. During his University career he was a most successful prizeman. The Archbishop was. ordained deacon iv isr>«"», and priest in 18(50. Ho was chaplain to the Bishop of Madras from 18(51 to 18155, curate of Holy Trinity, Cambridge, in 18(1(5, vicar of Trumpiugtou from 18(57 to 18li!>, and was appointed examining chaplain to the Bishop of Norwich iv the hitter year, aud honorary canon of Chester in 1880. He was priucinal of St. Aidan's College from 18(5!) to 188.), when ho was elected to the See of Syduoy. Owing to a difference with the authorities, he voluntarily withdrew his claim to the See, and was then duly elected and consecrated, iv 18110, as Metropolitan of the Province and Primate of Australia. In IS!)7 he was entitled Archbishop. Rev. Sanmarez Smith wrote a number of theological works.

[James Rigg was bom atNewcastle-on-Tyne, in 1821, and entered the ministry in 1845. In 18(58 he was appoiuted"Principal of the Westminster Training College for Teachers. In 1878 and 1802 he was President of the Wesleyau Conference. He was the writer of a number of books, mostly connected with Wesleyau Methodism, aud including the "Centenary Life of Wesley."]
