"LIFE."

THE MAY" NUMBER.

The Australian magazine "Life" for May, which is au exceptionally interesting number, contains a fine variety of instructive reading and an abundance of well-produced illustrations. The opening series of comments includes among its pictures a scene from the patriotic play, "An Englishman's Home," aud a photograph of Major Guy dv Maurier, the author of the drama. The naval crisis is the prevailing topic in "The Month." A full

page portrait of Admiral Sir John Fisher, First Sea Lord, is giveu, together with the text of his message to Australia, aud a facsimile of a portion of the same. "Life" is drawing attention, in a magnificent series of articles, to the undeveloped resources of Papua, or New Guinea, the islaud continent that now forms part of the Australiau Commonwealth. Tho attractive side of tropical life is well presented. Another article deals with the positiou of Australia's tropics. The editor continues the new series of "Strauge Pages in Australasian History"—"The Story of the Bushrangers." He also reviews, as the book of the mouth, "Nelson's Hardy." "The Book-lover" contains much that is interesting in the way of short reviews aud excerpts. The "Explanation Department" and tho section devoted to open-air topics are replete with novel titbits of information. The transplantation of living organs, some freaks of lightning, and a description of the new Davis torpedo, are the "New Thiugs in Science."
