DEPUTATION TO MINISTER

FOR EDUCATION.

CLASSED AS A LUXURY.

Duriug his visit to Masterton yesterday, Hou. G. Fovvlds, Minister for Education was driveu to the Masterton District High School and there waited upon by a deputation from the School Committee, who brought uuder his notice the desirabilty of providing a large assembly room,which could be created by the roofiug in of an opeu spaco between two existing wings The work, it was pointed out, could be accomplished for £(500.

The Minister, after viewing the spot for the proposed room, said he considered the project a luxury which was not required. So many claims were made ou the Department for bare necessities in schools that luxuries were out of the question, and he could uot soe his way clear to grant such.

Tiio deputation submitted that it was uo luxury. Iv all new schools au assembly-room was provided, aud at tho Mastertou School it was a bare uecessity. Tbe Minister was also reminded that the Government had not beeu too liberal to tho Masterton primary school, as during the past fifteen years practically no Government mouey had been expended on it.

Mr Fowlds still maintained that the work was not a necessity, and the most he could do would be to subsidise to tho exteut of £ for £ any subscriptions that might be collected for this purpose. Iv a tour of inspection of the school, the Minister expressed himself highly pleased with its management aud conduct. He also spoke words of commendation and encouragement to the cadets who were lined up in the yard. Mr Fowlds also paid a visit to the school garden, the appearance aud usefulness ot which greatly impressed him.
