A MAN RECEIVES TERRIBLE INJURIES.
(JB.y Telegravh — Press Association.) OHRISTCHURCH, Last Night
Yesterday afternoon, a serious accident occurred on board the collier Waiponi, which was discharging a cargo of coal at Lyttelton, the victim being a man named Alexander Greer, who was working in No. 2 hold. A Dasket of coal was being hoisted up, when it struck a derrick and capsized. A large piece of coal, weighing over half a hundredweight, fell out of the basket, and struck Greer on. the top of the head, inflicting terrible injuries. The unfortunate man was at once got up from the hold, and taken to the casualty ward, where he was attended. He was operated on, and it was found that he was suffering 'from' shock. There was a compound fracture of the top of the skull, which was splintered into small pieces, and a fracture of the base of the skull. Greer passed a fairly good night. He is still unconscious, although there was a slight improvement in his condition this morning.
