THE NEW GASWORKS.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PRO-

POSED BUILDINGS

The plaus for the new gasworks, on the site near the railway station, are now practically completed, and through tho courtesy of the architects (Messrs Varnham and Rose) a Daily Times reporter was given an opportunity to glance through them this morning. The main building, which is to be erected iv brick, covered with asbestos slate and cement facings, will face George-street, aud contains two wings, Ouo of these is liUft by 5S feet, stands 20ft high aud coutains the coal aud retort house. The other, which adjoins the first, is 14ft high, and has an external measurement of 22ft by 70ft. In t\us one are the machinery and men's the office aud bathroom. The lafl|o is a decided acquisition and will be welcomed by the employes Away from the main structure will be a storeroom, 51ft by 36ft by 15ft, which will be utilised as a general store, and will in addition provide fur a meter-room aud fitters' room.

The retort room will coutaiu five furnaces, aud the ground therein will be excavated to a depth of four feet to carry the retort bench. The earth thus taken out will be used to raise the coal house floor by 3ft (>iu, so as to bring it up to the same level as the railway sidiug which runs along the side of the building. Supplies of coal will be easily handled, and thereby a great saving will be effected. The trucks will run right alongside the coal-house, and the oue channelling will suffice.

All the roof will be in iron, aud in this part of the building au iunovation in the shape of a smoke turner will be introduced. This is designed to carry the smoke off the retorts quicker than is usual in gasworks not possessing this convenience. The back portion of the building will have a temporary iron wall to allow of the structure being extended at any future date. The architects expect to invito tenders for the erectiofltt: the building about the end of the Tmrrent week.
