EDUCATION BOARD.

A circular held over from the previous meeting from the Auckland Board, asking the Board's concurrence in a protest against the new proposals of the Department respecting technical instruction, because the allowances ■were reduced, was cousidered. The report of the secretary of the Technical School was adverse to the change. Mr Stewart;, secretary of the Board, said the effect on the school classes would not be prejudiced. The allowance for cookery was reduced, but that for agricultural lessons was correspondingly increased. It was decided not to join in the protest, but to ask that the cookery allowance be maintained. As the result of considerable discussion it was decided to recommend that section 141 of the Education Act, li) 04, be amended so that all children may be required to attend school unless satisfactory reasons for _ absence are given. It was intimated that a circular on the subject had been sent to other Boards, and sufficient time had not elapsed for replies. The replies received were favourable. It was resolved that the resolution, with an explanatory letter, should be sent to the Minister of Education.

On the motion of Mr Vile, it was resolved to express satisfaction with the proposals contained in the Education Bill, on account of the assistance it would give to teachers in the smaller schools.

The Jtsoard decided to contribute £49 towards the purchase of additional land at Te Ore Ore, so as to enlarge the present site, the committee defraying the balance, £30.

The following grants were approved :—£G4, for repairs and improvements at Matarawa; £2, for new gates at Wnakataki; £'.), fencing at new site on Range-road; £2, blinds for Mauriceville West.

Mr Turner was granted leave to occupy a section at Mangacne in consideration of his providing a room for the accommodation of school children; £2.was allowod for fencing horse paddock at Hxikauni. It was resolved that the headmaster of the South Wellington School be reminded that the school roll must not exceed 800.
