THE WEATHER.

WELCOME RAINFALL

GREAT BOON TO THE DISTRICT

Rain set in last evening, to the groat relief of the wholo community. For weeks past tho temperature botli night aud day, has been oppressively hot—admittedly to au almost unprecedented degree- at this season 1 within the recollection of the oldest inhabitants. The registered rainfall in Mastertou last uight was ouly 40 poiuts, though it was probably more in the out districts. The laud could have dotio with three times tho quautity, but tho situation has been saved for mauy au anxious aud almost despairing farmer who. to-day, is doubtless very thankful for the visitation. Our Taueru correspondent rings us up to say that they had had the first moisture from the hoaveus (excepting slight dews) since llth November, aucl that the whole district was jubilant iv cousoquouco. The ownor of many au empty tank and dry cistern would bless the rainfall, which must have refroshod many thousauds of acres of arid pasture, and put fresh life into languishing aud stunted grain crops. Had tho drought coutiuued it would havo entailed a Christmas full of anxiety and approhousious as regards rural prospects iv the future.

CARTERTON,

This Day

The prolouged drought here broko yesterday when heavy raiu fell continuously for several hours. Tho country was groatly in noed of rain, aud tho milk supplies at factories were falling cousiderably. Tho crops wero drying up and the prospects generally were bad. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.

Heavy raiu commenced to fall yesterday afteruoou, but the weather cleared at midnight. It will do immense good to the country, but there must be a heavier fall soon if the harvest is to be up to the average.
