WAIRARAPA DAILY TIMES. [Established Third of a Century.] MONDAY. DECEMBER 16, 1907. THE SHADOW OF A GREAT ROCK.
It is now centuries ago since a few fugitive Englishmen lauded on the Plymouth Rock. They had left the country of their birth because the conditions of that land were unendurable. These fugitives little knew what their humble act would initiate. From the footsteps of the Pilgrim Fathers, arose tho Great Republic—the wonder of the world ! Since that time things have much changed. The honest colonist is not now called upon to face the Red Indian, but he is now called upon to face ravening capitalism and corruption. In the turmoil arises Roosevelt, the Denouncer! Mr Roosevelt has put his finger on the weak spot. He lias shown himself a strong man in a perilous position. Although those interested in the promotion of great financial organisations, or trusts and combines, by which the public are defrauded, and the few become enormously wealthy at the expense of the community, may try to depreciate Mr Roosevelt and bis bold of the populai mind, and even impudently ascribe the financial panic to his interference with the laws laid down by the plutocratic oligarchy of Wall-street—the heart of the nation, the sentiment of the entire republic, will certainly applaud this fearless champion of Right in an atmosphere of corruption. America needed just such a man. She has him now, and whether he takes office again or not, he has commenced the work of commercial reform, and such a work once begun must go on.
