Gallon 3 for ID, Beechey 1 for The wicket on Saturday did not play well, aud the bowlers had the upper hand. The Masterton team, who, on the previous Saturday, had lost six wickets for 208, added only 16 runs before the last wicket fell. Redmond batted well for his further contribution, aud carried out his bat for 41. Esson increased his score to 19 runs, but the remaining batsmen did not materially increase the score. W. _ki Gallon obtained the best bowliug JBLanalysis for Cartertou, 4 for 45, the Beechey coming next with 3 for 73. Carterton did not open their second innings any too well, losing Smart and Hart for a small total. At one stage of the innings 5 wickets were down for 60 runs, but when Gallon Bros, became associated runs came freely. W. Gallon went in for free hitting, while C. Gallon played careful cricket. The partnership put on 62 runs, and the score-sheet showed 6 for 122. The remaining wickets added another 25 runs, making the total 147. Rawson came out with the best bowling analysis 3 for 18, and Logan next with 5 for 52. Both these players bowled well. It looked as though Masterton were going to have au easy win, as only 37 runs were required. But the uncertainty of cricket prevailed, and the winners lost 8 wickets before the necessary runs were obtained. The wicket was certainly not playing well, but I cannot account for the collapse of the local team. Redmond played confidently, but the other batsmen did not get going, and the finish of the game was very interesting—rather too much so for Masterton. Ticehurst and Gallon bowled really well for Carterton, the former's analysis reading 2 for 12, and the latter's 3 for 19. The fielding of both teams was fair, although I have seen the Masterton men to better advantage, especially in ground fielding. Bewley made two well judged catches in the long field. Messrs W. H. Galwey and Collinge officiated as umpires, and their decisions gave entire satisfaction. I regretted to see some of the players appearing on the cricket field not in proper cricketing costume. I think the players taking part iv matches, especially in senior cricket, should make au'effort to wear light flannels. Probably the Cricket Association could make a rule bearing on the matter.
