"THE SIREN."
From the heart of the swirling searnist, Where the unseen perils hide, Conies the angry scream of the sirou Far flung on the ebbing tide. Like the cry of a stricken monster, Hard-prest by a nameless foe. It rouses the slumbering echoes Uneasily to and fro. Then long in the gloom and the darkness To the anxious eyes that strain, Reigns the hush "of the quivering silence. Till the sireu cries again. Away in the fog-bound distance, Where the hurrying livers steam, They count the ebb of the seconds And wait for the siren's scream. In the maze of the busy Channel, When the guiding lights are blind, By the warning cry of the siren, 'The hidden track they find. With the stir of the fog's slow lifting. The siren sleeps at last: The sky grows clear in the starlight--The dread of the night is past. —0.F.8. St. James's Budget.
