LABOUR MARKET.

We take the following from the current number of the Journal of the Department of Labour: —

MASTERTON

During the period uuder review the weather conditions have been good, and progress has been made with the various large buildings in course of erection. Though trade generally was fair, business people report that money is still "tight." No doubt the wet winter experienced may in a great measure account for this. Building trades : Satisfactory in all brauches. Furniture trade: Medium business, with indications of improvement. Sash and door making: Good. Ooachbuildiug: Good repair business, aud orders coming in freely. Coachpaintiug: Very busy. Moulding: Medium business. Cycle trade: Repairs good; sales slack. , Saddlery: All hands making full time. Engineering : Fair. General blacksmithing: Good. Plumbing: Very good, with a number of orders on hand. Tailoring: Exceptionally busy, a fair amount of overtime being worked during the mouth ; hands required. Millinery and dressmakuig: Good. Retail trades : Reports indicate that fair business has been transacted, though "booking ' was heavier than usual. Unskilled labour: There were twentythree applicants during the mouth, of whom twelve were sent to private and one to Government employment. Good bushmeu are in demand, and four could be immediately placed. TE NUI. Building trades: There are no buildings in course of erection, but local carpenters have been fairly well employed during the month at repairing shearing-sheds and dwellings. Retail trades: Good trade has been done in all branches during the month. Unskilled labout: All local men have been fully employed during the month at scrub-cutting,'ploughing, roadwork, and shearing. Only a few swaggers were seen on the road during the month, aud they got employment in the shearing-sheds here. About thirty men were also brought from Masterton to work in the shearing-sheds, as there were none available in the district at the time. One or two sheds are now working several shearers short, and will be late in finishing.
