Sido by side in a crowded train sat a portly old lady of majestic appearance and an insignificant little man, whom she was squeezing unmeroifully; but lie was too well-bred to inform her of tills. Presently two young ladies entered, and were" obliged to staud; whereat the stout lady gazed suggestively first at the little man and then at the two fair ''strap-hangers.'' But the diminutive man did not budge. At last tho corpulent lady spoke. "Sir," sho said, "if you were a gentleman you would got up and give one of thoso ladios a soat.''

Tho little man groaned with pain as her elbow worked further into his suffering ribs, and then replied sadly: "Madam, if you wore a lady yon would got up and give both a seat."
