CAUTION TO THE UNWARY.
Not so very long ago, New Zealand was flooded with circulars emanating from an individual named Dorey Lester, who was supposed to be in business in a large- way as a watch-maker at Home. In this circular some tempting bargains in the watch line were advertised at prices with which the local tradesmen could not hope to compete. Many people out here swallowed the bait, with the result that a considerable quantity of orders, accompanied by cash, were sent to Lester. The only drawback to the otherwise tempting bargains lay in the fact that Lester had a conveniently defective memory and failed to send the goods in return for the cash. It may interest Dorey Lester's victims to learn that that forgetful individual has just received a sentence of three years' imprisonment at London for obtaining money under false pretences. As an instance of the gullibility of the public, it may be mentioned that the police found 2400 letters in Lester's office, each of which had contained an order and money for a watoh. Lester's constitutional forgetfulness had gone too far.
