AN AGED CHIEFTAINESS.

Death of the Oldest Maori

News lias just been received in Masterton of the death at Kaiwhata, on Tuesday, of Kehurangi Ringatu Waaka (generally called Ringatu), probably the oldest Maori in New Zealand at the time of her death. Ringatu, who is reputed among the Maoris to be from 120 to 125 years old. was probably at the least 110 years old. She well remembered the second visit of Captain Cook to New Zealand, and was acquainted with facts relating to the earliest colonization of New Zealand, which uudoubteldy go to prove that the latter surmise regarding her age is correct. She is the last of theNgaitumatahias, oneof the fiercest of the old fighting tribes. At the

rceent festivities at Te Ore Ore a great-great-great-grandson of deceased's named Hamaiwaho was among the three children christened. Ringatu enjoyed remarkable vitality, and her death occurred somewhat unexpected' ly, after a short illness. A great taugi will be held at Kaiwhata, which a very large number of Maoris is expected to attend. Ringatu leaves a number of descendants.
