The Member for Masfcertou failed, by one vote, last; evening, to carry his motion for the Abolition of Flour Duty. If, as is alleged, rings and combines affect the cost of the poor man's loaf, the obvious remedy is to allow outside competition to make such combinations impossible. Of course, farming interests would, to a limited extent, be affected by a removal of flour duty; and for this reason, a short time ago, we advocated lowering the present levy as a preliminary step. This we regarded as a reasonable compromise between the demand for a cheap loaf and a small measure of protection to the farmer. It would probably suffice to check the development of rings and combines.
