MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Oas and Finance CommitteeA meeting of the Gas and*-Finance Committee of the Masterton Borough Council was held, last evening, there being present:—Grs Temple (chairman), Ewingiori, Yaw Witt EUjpft, The Gas Manager reported tillftt the laying of the three-inch main in Hogg , Crescent, and the extension of the existing oue-and-a-quarter-inch main ill Wrigley-street to Villa-street —a distance of 10 chains 50 feet—had been completed. Street lamps could be erected in Hogg Crescent, Reuall-street and at tho corner of Villa-street and Wrigley-street as soon as the Council directed. The mains for the extension of the gas to Essex and Cole-streets had come to hand, and the work could be proceeded with at once, but for the fact that the roads are not yet out of the hands of the contractors. This was unfortunate, as a number of householdrs were waiting to be supplied with gas, and tho department was losing business. The plant was in good order, but it would be necessary to replace six retorts in the No. 1 bed during the coming summer, and the Manager recommended that an order be placed for the new retorts. The Manager,in conclusion, asked the Committee to decide as soon as possible the question of replacing the present scrubber and washer.
The following motions were carr: l ec i (l) That the work of main-lay-ing in Essex, Cole and Pownallstreets be gone on with as soon as the streets are taken over; (2) that the Works Committee be recommended to proceed with the erection of the street lamps in Hogg Crescent, Reuall-street, and the corner of Wrigley-street and Villa-street; '(3) that the retorts be ordered as recommended by the Manager of the Gasworks; ("4) that the yard office be shifted to make a temporary valve room at the Gasworks; (5) tliat the tender of McElwain and Andrew, at 17s per chain for pipelaying to the Hospital, be accepted; ((5) that the Chairman and Crs Elliott and Ewiugtou.be empowered to make necessary alterations to the Municipal offices at a, cost not to exceed £15. Accounts amounting to £720 los 4d were passed for payment.
