The Hon. Dr Findlay, Attorney-General, leaves Wellington for a visit to Auckland to-morrow morning.
Mr Vincent E. Rice has just completed thirty years' service as secretary to the Auckland Education Board.
Constable Griffiths, of Carterton, who is at present trying the climate of Rotorua for his health, is expected to arrive home on Saturday next.
Hon. J. Carroll, Native Minister, is now almost convalescent after his recent severe indisposition. He will attend next meeting of Cabinet.
Mr and Mrs Coleman Phillips, who have been on a month's holiday in Australia, returned to Carterton on Saturday after an enjoyable trip.
The Welling ton Benevolent Trustees have appointed Mr J. E. Page acting-secretary to the institution. Mr Page recently received the appointment of treasurer.
His Honor Mr Justice Denniston is at present laid up at Christchurch with influenza, and will be unable to take the cases which had been arranged for him next week.
A purse of sovereigns has been presented to Mr John Watters, of Dunedin, on severing his connection, after thirty-three years' service, with the New Zealand Hardware Company in that city.
Mrs C. Vallance is still confined to her bed as the result of the trap accident last week, but it is expected that she will be progressing towards convalescence by the end of the present week.
A cable message from London states that the Princess Royal (Duchess of Fife), who recently underwent a second operation, is progressing, though speedy recovery is not expected. Her complaint is painful but not dangerous.
Hon. W. Kidstone, Queensland's Premier, passed through Sydney to Melbourne, yesterday, en route for New Zealand, where he will spend a short holiday, and make enquiries with regard to some public questions.
The Hon. W, Hall-Jones, Minister for Railways, left Christchurch for Wellington last night, having (says a Press Association telegram) received information that his son, who has been in ill-health for some time, has to undergo an operation.
Among the personal effects of the late J. L. Toole to be auctioned at London, on November Sth, was an ostrich's egg mounted in silver that was presented to him by the members of the Christchurch Club during his visit to the City of the Plains in 1890.
Mr George Brown, a very old Lyttelton identity, died suddenly on Thursday night, at his house, aged seventy nine years. Hβ was, in the old days, a warder at Lyttelton Gaol, and later was, for many years, a luggage porter on the Lyttelton wharves. Recently, he gave up active work.
Information has been received by Mr H. H. Rayward (partner in the firn of Baldwin and Rayward) that he has been successful in the recent law examination, having passed the first half-section of the final LL.B. and Law Professional Division.
Miss M. D. Alexander, of Kilgour-street, Roslyn, has received intimation of her appointment as kindergarten mistress at the Queen's Park School, Wanganui. Miss Alexander is at present teaching in the Prince Albert College, Auckland.
Mr and Mrs J. M. Lightfoot, and daughter, of Carterton, were passengers by Monday's express en route for Auckland. They are to be absent from Carterton for a month, during which period, Mr Lightfoot's place at the Bank of New South Wales will be filled by Mr C. Finch.
Mr Nat. Hooper, who is about to leave Masterton for Gisborne, was presented on Sunday with a Bible and a silver match-box by the pupils and teachers of St. Matthew's Sunday School, in recognition of seven years' work at the Echool. Mr A. E. Rees made the presentation. In the evening the choir presented Mr Hooper with a handsome writing desk.
Great sympathy (says the Free Lance) is felt for Miss Martha Grace, the charming half caste young lady who is known as " the Wairarapa Princess." By a hard stroke of fate, the estate of Mahupuku, of which she is the heiress, figures as an unsecured creditor in H. S. Izard's liabilities for many thousands of pounds. Miss Grace only returned from England three weeks ago.
Constable L. Mclvor, of the Auckland Police Force, has been transferred to New Plymouth. Constable Mclvor holds the Auckland middle-weight amateur wrestling championship, and also the Royal Humane Society's silver medal, which he was awarded some years ago for his bravery in rescuing, in company with Constable R. Sims (who was also awarded the medal), two women and a man from a burning boardinghouse in Wyndham-street.
The Rev. E. P. Blamires, formerly of Richmond, in the Christchurch Methodist Circuit, is spending his " year of rest" with marked activity in Great Britain. He has already visited forty counties of the United Kingdom, preached in many churches, and delivered many well-attended lectures. Altogether, Mr Blamires has had a time of much active enjoyment, meeting and conversing with many ex-New Zealanders, or the friends of people in New Zealand. Mr Blamires has booked his passage by the Mongolia, which was to leave London on the 7th of this month. Breaking his journey at Port Said, he expects to spend Christmas in the historic town of Bethlehem.
