(By Telegraph—Press Association.) Dunedin, Last Night.

A representative meeting of citizens was held to-day for tho purpose of organising a public reception to Sir J. G. Ward in Dunedin prior to his departure for the Colonial Conference. A committee was appointed to make arrangements. Wanoanui, Last Night. Sir Joseph ar d to-day, unveiled a monument erected to the memory of troopers from this district who fell in South Africa. Sir Joseph's remarks were nonpolitical. In the course of an address to the Volunteers, at the conclusion of the unveiling ceremony, Sir Joseph Ward intimated that he intended making a statement as to the composition of the new Defence Council on his return to Wellington. The Premier said the Government intended to place Volunteers on a much better footing than at present, and to offer inducements to civilians to becam-jj marksmen.
