AN IMPORTANT LOCAL INDUSTRY.

House Furnishers and Furniture Manufacturers.

The business recently opened in Masterton by Messrs G. Hyde and Co., furniture manufacturers and general house furnishers, adds another important industry to this townThe firm has erected such a commodious factory, and installed all the latest laboursaving machinery, that they will not only be enabled to fill their own orders quickly, but will be in a position to manufacture for the trade at prices that must command business. The new premises in Queen-street, devoted solely to the display of the firm's goods, are quite as up to-date as any to be found in the Empire City. The interior is lofty and well lighted, and is eminently suited for conducting a big business such as the firm is sure to command. Rooms have also been provided for making special displays such as completely furnished rooms, which will undergo changes from time to time, representing in tarn each room in a well appointed household. Customers will then have the advantage of seeing how particular goods would appear when in their own homes. They have also appointed a capable Home buyer, who will operate solely amongst the leading Home manufacturers, and ship regularly all the leading lines suited to colonial trade.

The factory is certainly one of the best equipped in the colony, with ample light and good ventilation. On the ground floor is situated the power and machinery, the latter being driven by a 15 h.p. Tangye gas engine. All the latest wood-working machinery for the manufacture of high-class furniture is included. Band-saws, capable of putting through a good deal of solid work, aie set up, whilst a surfacer .and thicknesaer, capable of taking in a plank 24 inches wide, is in position, and is a great labour saver. Shapers and moulders, turning lathes, circular saws, and indeed every other cltis3 of machinery inseparable from a furniture manufactory have been secured and erected in the factory. The second floor is devoted solely to the workmen, of whom there are no less than fifteen engaged at present. Furniture of all descriptions in course of construction can be seen, and our representative noticed some really fine show cases that had just been completed to the order of a local business man. The upholstering department adjoins the workroom, the hands being kept working at high pressure to keep up with orders. The polishing room is spacious and has been erected so as to prove absolutely dustproof, a necessary precaution where the best class of vvork is required. Detached from the factory is the kapoc and tow room, built in brick, and which contains a teasing machine, capable of turning out large quantities of " teased" flock, hair or kapoc hourly.

The factory and showrooms are under the personal supervision of Mr G. Hyde, and the business is run on proper business lines. Orders are put in hand quickly, and are turned out in the best possible way calculated to give entire satisfaction to clients The firm is manufacturing goods to be sent to all parts of the district, and as far north as Dannevirke, and in time it is confidently anticipated that the trade will be supplied in all parts of the colony.
