PETITION AGAINST A ROAD.

Twenty well-known Alfredton settlers have forwarded a petition, addressed to the Minister of Public Work", protesting against the further construction of the Hinemoa-Alfredton-road through section 175, block 8, Mangaone, and asking that the original road laid off over Stonewigg's saddle be made. The petitioners give the following reasons for preferring Stonewigg's road :--

1. It is a mile shorter than Claphanvs route, or less than half the length. 2. There are no engineering difficulties ; it can be easily made, and for less than half the cost of Clapham's. 3. Metal is very scarce and costly, and the saving of a mile of road means reducing a heavy expenditure for all time. 4. The adoption of Clapham's-road will compel settlers in tli9 Pah Valley, residing opposite Alfredton, to travel seven or eight miles further in order to reach the township than they would by Stonewigg's saddle. 5. We have never been consulted about the connection of road through Clapham's property, or we should have protested against it. __________________
