CARTERTON NOTES.

(Special to Daily Times.)

The surveyors were to be seen at work on Saturday on the site of the proposed new street, Broadway.

A start is to be made in the course of a few days with the erection of a new private residence in Wakelin-street for Mr Howard Armstrong, of this town.

A meeting of the management of St. Mark's Sunday School was held on Friday evening, the Rev. R. Young presiding. It was decided to hold the annual picLic on January 31st, the locality being held in abeyance. It. was resolved to repeat the Christmas carols the same as last year.

The four-face chiming clock, for Carterton, is expected to arrive here during the present week, and it is hoped will be erected immediately.

The funeral of the late Mr Donald McPhee, of Gladstone, took place on Friday, the cortege being a lengthy one, comprising relatives and friends of the deceased. The pallbearers were Messrs A. McPhee, jun., D. McPhee (grand nephews of the deceased), A. Grant, and H. Smith. The Rev. J. A. Brown, of the Presbyterian Church, Greytown, officiated at the graveside.

In the absence of Mr J. A. Gilruth, Chief Government Veterinarian, he being unable to attend, Mr C. J. Reakes, Assistant Chief Government Veterinarian, lectured to an audience of farmers here on Saturday afternoon.

A horse attached to a trap, the property, of Mr W. Campin, of Waihakeke, was left standing outside a local business place on Saturday, with the reins attached to one of the wheels. The animal became restive, and moving about, the reins got the horse into difficulties, which it endeavoured to free itself from by kicking, considerably damaging the vehicle. The assistance of two passers-by prevented any further damage.

Already four local weddings are spoken of to take place between now and New Year,
