COUNTY ENGINEER'S REPORT

m "Hi The following is a copy of the report submilted to tbe meeting of the Masterton County Council; by the County Engineer, on TuoKday afternoon :— Oi'AKt Riding.—Upper Opaki Road.— Contract No. 106: Re-forming and metalling 10 chains of road.—The contractor reports lhat he expects to finish his contract by the 14th instant. Oak's Estate Streets (Loan).—As instructed by the.Council, I have interviewed the promoters of the Oak's Estate Loan, and it has been agreed to eliminate 7 chains from the original contract of 72 chains, to bring the works within the limit of the loan; the promoters agreeing to find the necessary expenses incurred in connection with raising same. The contract has been let to M. Kerins, to be completed by the 30th December.

Waingawa to Camp Road.—The necessary repairs to two small platform bridges in the vicinity of Kopuaranga have been attended to.

Opaki Loop Line.—A 6ft wide stock bridge, over the Waipipi, has been constructed, with approaches of stonework tdfc same.

T_ Whiti Riding.—Columba Road Fenc-ing.-Contract No. 100.—The fencing of above road is being substantially erected, and is well on the way towards completion. The lessee, Mrs Ewington, has made a request for the erection of three gates on the road line, as the fencing through the property has entailed a third sub division. I have arranged for the gates to be erected

Te Ore Ore Estate Roads.—Tbe Committee, appointed to interview Mr McKillop in connection with the deviation on his road frontage, met on the 12th ult. From inspection, Mr McKillop decided the diversion of the streams on nis proposed deviation would be too costly for his undertaking. It was therefore agreed to adhere to the old line, which has been made temporarily fit for wheel traffic.

Robieson's Road.—The grading, on the above road, in connection with Mr Robieson's contribution, has been completed, and an unformed length of about 20 chains on the southern end of the road has also been graded, Messrs McKenzie and Pike having ploughed and prepared the ground for the grader.

Masterton-Gladstone Road.-The unexpended balance of Creelman's contract l]______ been utilised in improving the side There are several lengths on this road which might cheaply be converted into side widths for wheel traffic, by the use of plough and grader, which I would ask leave to undertake from time to time, as facility offers.

Waingawa Protective Works.—The recent flood in the river has changed the direction ot the main stream, which is utdermining the northern bank about 5 chains above the bridge; it will be necessary to strengthen a groin and an overflow bank, at tbe cost of about £15.

Rangitumau Riding.—Wangaehu Road. — Contract 76: 616 chains of metalling was commenced on the 22nd ultimo, and fair progress is being made towards completion. Contract No. 7_: 100"49 chains of metalling is being again proceeded with, a length of about sor 6 chains having been laid. The expenditure of the balance of the allocation on the Dorset's road is being spent in metal repairs.

Alfredton Riding. — Alfredton - Weber Road. —Eketahuna to Tawataia Section. — Contract No. 65 : About 80 cubic yards surface repairs.—The uncompleted portion of this contract will be started next week. Contract No. 78 : Metalling Tiraumea Valley will also be started next week, weather permitting. Contract No. 102: Rakaunui Section (25 chains of metalling with burnt papa) —The contractors are at present engaged re-forming and preparing IA. Hutewai Road (accrued thirds.) - Contrw. No. 105: 35 chains of metalling with burnt p.ipa has been let to Bellshaw Bros., who advise me they will proceed with the work immediately.

Waihoki Road.—Repairs are being made to the above road. Mount Baker RoadContract No. 81 (103 chains of metalling with burnt papa.)—As tenders have been invited twice for the above work without success, I would suggest that tenders be called for burning alone, failing which, that the contract be re-prepared for metalling from Harding's pit? Upper Taueru Riding.—Mangarai Road. —Contract No. 1 has been duly completed.

Repairs to the Waipipi dray track are being proceeded with. Glendonald-Wairere Road.—Contract No. 103 was let at last meeting. The contractor informs me that he has ordered the timber, and expects to have the bulk of it on the ground during the coming month. Te Ore Ore-Bideford Road.—The depressions in the formation on miles 11 and 16 have been filled up and metalled preparatory to wool traffic.

Wainuioru Riding. — Weraiti-Brance-peth Road. — Contract 94a : Building a bridge over the Taueru. — This work is practically finished, the contractor tijw.'taking to remedy any discrepancies <_§Hng the maintenance period. The fields survey of 3;| miles of the Weraiti Brancepeth Road has been made, and plans are now being prepared for contracts.
