Wellington, This Day
Dalgety and Co.'s London office cables under date 13th instant:—The market is very firm for merinos and fine crossbreds Considerable private sales have taken place at much above prices ruling at close of September series. There is more demand at somewhat higher prices for coarse crossbred wools. The " Bears" seem " cornered."
[In Stock Exchange phraseology, a " Bear," is one who contracts to deliver a certain quantity of stock ou a forthcoming clay, but who does not possess it, trusting that the stock will go down, and so enable him to fulfil his contract and realise a profit. The oppose of " Bear" is " Bull," who is one who agrees to buy stock at a stated price on a future day, but who simply speculates for a rise to gain a profit.]
