A TRAMWAY STRIKE.

Auckland Operatives Cease

Work

A Satisfactory Settlement

{By Telegraph — Press Association.)

Auckland, Last Night,

Owing to men employed on the Tramway Company's cars being dismissed, for refusing to instruct new hands, a general strike occurred in the afternoon. The first dismissal took place at 10.30 a.m. Up to 3 o'clock in the afternoon ten men had been dismissed. At 4.30, practically all the men came out on strike, this course of action having apparently been decided upon at hurriedly convened meetings of men off duty. By 5 o'clock, when the heavy traffic commences, there were no cars running, and along Queen-street empty cars were ranged from the wharf nearly up to Shortlandstreet. The disorganisation of traffic continued for about three hours after tea. A conference took place between representatives of the company and employes, when it was agreed that the employe whose dismissal had caused the trouble should be allowed to resign, as from the end of November, his wages*to be paid till that date ; and that the other men who had been dismissed should be allowed to resume work. The trams then resumed running as usual. At about 7.50 a large crowd gathered in front of the Tramway Company's office, and made a hostile demonstration against .the managing director when he appeared. He was greeted with prolonged hooting and groaning. He was subsequently escorted into an adjacent hotel by several constables. At the same time two of the Company's plate-glass windows were smashed by missiles thrown from the crowd.
