A Waihi message states that at the inquest on Mr W. C. Fitzgerald, chemist, a verdict was returned of misadventure by taking an overdose of trional while in a physically weak state.

.Mr F. E. Glasgow, of the Bank of New Zealand at Waipawa, and formerly of Hawera, has been transferred to Invercargill. Mr Glasgow was a member of the " All Black " football team.

" Granny " Craske, of Sheringham, Norfolk, is probably the oldest Salvationist in tho world, for she will celebrate her 100 th birthday in December. ■ Despite her great age she attends an occasional open-air meeting.

A Timaru message states that Mr E. G. Kerr, Managing Director of the Timaru Herald, and formerly proprietor of tho Herald and South Canterbury Times, died this morning, after a painful illness. Deceased, who had been ailing from Bright's disease during the past six years, was a widower, 61 years of age, and leaves four sons andsix daughters.

Mr G. H. Day, who has resided in the Dreyer's Rock district for over twenty years, has acquired a property in the Waverley district. Mr Day, who is regarded as one of our most enterprising farmers, has been chairman of the Dreyer's Rock School Committee for many years, as well as a valued member of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society and Masterton A. and P. Association. At the last annual meeting he was elected President of St. Patrick's Sports Association, which position he has now resigned. Mr and Mrs Day and family leave for their new home next week.

A cable message announces the death of Sir Richard Tangye, the celebrated engineer, at the age of 73. Sir Richard Tangye was head of the great engineering firm of Tangyes, Birmingham, London, Johannesburg, Sydney, etc. He was founder (with his brother, Mr George Tangye) of the Birmingham Art Gallery and Municipal School of Arts. Sir Richard was educated at Sidcot School, Somersetshire. His publications are " Reminiscences of Travel in Australia, America and Egypt," " The Growth of a Great Industry," " The Two Prosecutors," etc. His principal recreations were collection of manuscripts, books, prints, coins, medals, etc., in relation to Oliver Cromwell and the Commonwealth period.

Mr Alex. Rose, Collector [ol Customs at Auckland, who is to retire on pension at the end of tbe present financial year, arrived in. New Zealand (says the Auckland Htar) by the ship Joseph Fletcher in 1856, and in the following year he entered the Customs Department at Christchurch. In 1861 he became sub-collector of Customs, and was sent to open Timaru as a port of entry. In December, 1863, he was appointed landing surveyor at Lyttelton, and after four years was transferred to Auckland, where he remained for a period of seven and a-half years. In 1875 he was appointed to the post of Collector of Customs at Lyttelton, and remained there until 1892, when he was appointed as Collector of Customs at Auckland, which position he has held ever since. In 1860-1861 lie was a member of the Lyttelton Riile Volunteers. In those days when Mr Rose joined there were only eleven rifles for 210 men, and these had to be passed round turn about.
