WAIRARAPA CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.
Annual Meeting.
The annual meeting of members of the Wairarapa, Caledonian Society was held in the Club Hotel on Saturday afternoon. Mr J. B. McKenzie (President) was in the chair, and there were thirty present.
Messrs G. D. McFarlane, C. A. Tabateau, J. Miller, Farquhar Gray and Walter Daley were elected new members. Mr M. C. O'Connell resigned membership.
The action of the President and Secretary, in remitting £3 3s on behalf of an unfortunate Scotchman at Wanganui, who lately lost a leg, was confirmed.
The report and balance-sheet was presented, the latter showing assets consisting of £209 lis lid, sports account £123 16s 9d, concert,account (with accrued interest) £4 7s od, also £38 is 2d cash in hand, and marquee valued at £15, being a total of £400.
The President, in moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, expressed pleasure at the success achieved by the Society, especially so since Mr Thos. Duncan had held the position of secretary. The speaker mentioned that in 1898, when Mr Duncan was appointed, the Society had a deficiency of £24 ; the next year this debit was wiped off, ancl a credit of £34 odd shown, and every year since then steady advance had been made. A great deal of credit for the present strong and nourishing position of the Society was due to the efficient manner in which Mr Duncan had carried out his duties. The President regretted that Mr Duncan's services would shortly be lost to the Society.
Mr Hill seconded the motion and congratulated the officers on the very satisfactory result of tho year's operations. Several speakers followed in a similar strain and the motion, on being put to the meeting, was carried. The election of officers for the year resulted as follows :--President, Mr J. li. Pauling ; Vice-Presidents, Messrs T. Wyeth aud J. McHattie; Treasurer, Mr E. E. Chamberlain; Auditor, Mr R. Brown ; Directors, Messrs R. Cameron, 11. J. Dagg, F. F. Day, R. Gray, D. Guild, G. Heron, A. Mutrie, F. Hill, T. P. Lett, A. McLeod, J. McLean, J. McKenzie (Te Whiti), D. McLachlan, W. D. Watson, G. Stewart, G. McHattie, J. C.McKillop, J. B. McKenzie, W. Sellar, A Tumor, A. Fraser, J. Strang, E 11. Waddington and W. L. Falconer.
A hearty vote of thanks was parsed to Mr J. B. McKen.ic for his services to the Society as President last year.
Intimation was received that Mr Butler, of Martinborough, offered a gold medal valued at £2 2s, for best maiden piper, and Mr H. W. Clay, of Morrison's Bush, a trophy valued £1 Is, for maiden highland lling.
Mr McLean gave notice, as a recommendation to the Programme Committee, that prizes be awarded for best dressed Highlander, and best dressed boy under 10
years of age
