THE NORTHERN APPROACH.
Borough Committee at Work
The committee appointed on the motion of Cr F. W. Temple, at the last meeting of the Masterton Borough Council, to go into the question of improving the northern approach to the town are moving energetically in the direction of bringing the proposal to some finality. Crs Temple and Evvington were the only two in attendance at a meeting convened for last evening, but apologies were sent by the other two members, Crs Eton and Pauling. The two first-named, however, went into the matter thoroughly, and arranged a definite course of procedure, as well as recommending the work of improvement to be carried out. It is proposed to appoint a deputation of Lansdowne residents to wait on the next meeting of the Masterton County Council, and urge the dangerous state of the second Waipoua bridge and its approach, and to point out that a scheme for improving the same is of public importance—beneficial to both the town and district—and is of urgent necessity. In the interim the cost of the suggested work will be gone into minutely, to include such improvements as fully utilising the chain and a-half roadway between the two bridges, constructing a footpath to be divided by a row of trees so that pedestrians may use the one half and cyclists the other; widening the approach from the Lansdowne side to the second bridge, and adding to the width of both bridges, all the widening to take place on the eastern side. A rough estimate of the cost of the scheme is £1500 for the bridge work and £1000 for road improvement. When a reliable statement of the cost of the work is prepared, the Committee ■ propose to interview the County Council, and failing co-operation and assistancefrora that body, application will be made to the Government for the appointment of a Commission to report on the whole question.
