MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Masterton Borough Council was held last evening. His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. A. Renall) presided, and there were also present: Crs J. H. Pauling, Jas. Elliott, F. W. Temple, W. Morris, J. C. Ewington, E. Feist, E. McEwen and E. G. Eton. An apology for absence was received from Cr T. G. Hoar. The Veterinary Department advised tho appointment of Mr D. Elliot to the position of Government Inspector at the abattoirs, and asked that he be appointed Manager at a salary of £50 per annum. It was mentioned that Mr Elliot would, on arrival, confer with the Council as to a small travel-

ling allowance, owing to the distance of the

abattoirs from the train.- Mr Elliot's apas manager was approved. •«- The Secretary of the Wairarapa North Benevolent Society applied for the extension " of the water main to the Renall-Solway Home, offering to pay interest on the capital outlay involved.-On the motion of the Mayor the Town Clerk was instructed to prepare a report, for the next meeting, showing the rates from the sections on the route, and the persons likely to become consumers, the engineer to give an estimate of the cost of the work.

The Very Rev. Dean Mclvenna waited on the Council to urge the immediate carrying out of improvements to the mill stream in order to prevent Hooding of the Convent and adjoining properties*—The Mayor pointed out that the work in question was on the urgent list, and would receive immediate attention.

Mr C. King attended the meeting with a request to have the footpath formed along Hogg's Crescent, pointing ouf these were

only a few chains which would cost between

£13 and £15.—The Mayor stated that the work was on the loan schedules and be carried out along with other proposals in a similar position. Cr Eton drew attention to the dangerous condition of the footpath in Dixon street, between Mr Hooper's property and Bannis-ter-street, and the need for immediate improvement being effected. Cr Eton stated although it was proposed to take steps to widen the street, the footpath should be levelled up, otherwise accidents would probably occur to pedestrians.- -The Mayor undertook to instruct the Engineer to make the footpath passable.

A report was submitted of the visit to the Park paid by the Mayor and Crs Ewington, Elliott, Eton and Morris. They had also inspected the river and the site of he proposed stop-bank at the river. It was recommended that the stop-bank be erected in accordance with the plans drawn up by the Engineer ; that the present bank at- the old bank fence be continued along the eastern side of the Waipoua river, along the boundary of the ten acres ; that the material necessary be taken from the ten acres where it is proposed to excavate for the baths and water. report was adopted.

Four tenders were received for the construction of the stop bank, and that of Messrs Gadsby and Bartlett, at £48, was accepted. Mr H. T. Wood applied, on behalf of the Managers of the Presbyterian Church, for the £100 for the section of land taken by the Council in the formation of Hesseystreet. The amount was passed.
