LABOUR MARKET.
The following labour market reports are taken from the journal of the Department of Labour for May : —
Masterton*.—There is no change since last report, business generally continuing to be quite up to the usual standard. Reports vary somewhat, but in the large majority of cases very good business has been done, notwithstanding the greatly increased competition in most lines. Building trades : All classes have been fully employed during the month. Some contractors report sufficient work in hand for some time to come, and there are reports of other work to be shortly put in hand which will ensure employment for local tradesmen well into the winter. ■
Engineering trades: Business has agaiu been fairly good ; some report a slight easing-off since last report, while others state that business is brisk.
Tailoring trade: A fairly good season's trade has been done.
Dressmaking: About the usual average for this season; a little overtime was worked prior to the Easter holidays. Saddle ancl harness makers : Fair business has been done, all hands working full time. Coachbuilding: About as usual. Local tradesmen have been kept fully employed. Brickmaking : Busy. There are quite a number of brick buildings at present in course of erection. Furniture trade : Owing to the steady increase of population, a satisfactory business continues to be done by the furnituremanufacturers. All local hands fully employed. Retail trades (general) : Traders state that they have no cause to complain, ancl, generally speaking, trade has been very good during the month.
Unskilled labour : Work has been fairly plentiful throughout the district for ablebodied labourers, and the supply has been about sufficient to meet the demand. TE _-I. Building trades: Brisk. All carpenters have been fully employed during the month repairing and erecting dwelling-houses. Retail trade : Good business has been doing in all branches during the month. Unskilled labour : All local men have been fully employed during the month at roadAvork, fencing, scrub-tutting, chaff-cutting, firewood-cutting, and ploughing. Only a feAv SAvaggers were seen on the road during the month, and they had no trouble in obtaining Avork at scrub-cutting. Several good men are required for scrub-cutting in his district at Is per hour.
