PERSONAL MATTERS.

Mr T. J. Rathbone, who recently severed his connection with Messrs W. Booth and Co., timber merchants, to enter into the same line of business on his own account, was, on Saturday evening, presented at Carterton with a handsome marble clock, inscribed as follows : " Presented to Mr T. J. Rathbone by his fellow employes, as a slight recognition of their regard, on his resigning his position* as manager for Messrs Wm. Booth and Co; : January 13th, 1906," The presentation was made by Mr A. Dennison, who has held the position of head machinist for Messrs Booth and Co. for fifteen years, and in doing so he referred to Mr Rathbone's long and faithful service extending over twenty-five years. Mr Rathbone suitably acknowledged the gift. A social evening was held afterwards.

Mr D. Elliott, the Government Inspector appointed for the Masterton Abattoir, is expected to- arrive on the 18th inst.

Miss Burnett, of Belvedere, has presented to the Carterton Town Clock Committee a valuable oil-painting.

Mr W. Hamer, of Carterton, who, some days ago, fell off a scaffolding while engaged painting, and hurt his back, is now getting about.

During the progress of the Oriental B - Southern Rugby match at Miramar, Wellington,' oh Saturday, Lionel Dawson, 18 years of age, residing at Newtown, fell and broke his left thigh. He was taken to the Hospital.

Mr J. G. W. Aitken, M.H.R., ex-Mayor of Wellington, who is at present in Scotland, will leave Liverpool for New York by the Lucania, and will return by way of Canada, leaving Vancouver about the end of next month. Miss Tucker, daughter of Mr H. B. Tucker, of Palmerston, and formerly of Carterton, met with an unpleasant adventure on Sunday afternoon. While riding up Fitzherbert-street, her horse bolted suddenly towards town. Mr D. Graham, wellmounted, galloped to the rescue, and gripped the rein of the runaway, but was unable to check its career. After traversing several streets, Mr Graham's hoive suddenly got beyond control, -and Miss Tucker's mount then galloped home and entered the stable. The rider, though the horse was a big and powerful animal, stuck gamely to her seat, and came through the ordeal well.

Mr J. U. Collins, one of the masters of Christ's College, Christehurch, has resigned, to take up land in the North Island.

The death occurred, yesterday, at her residence, Tinakori-road, Wellington, of Mrs McKay, wife of Mr A. McKay, Government Geologist. The deceased lady had been an invalid for some time past, and her end was not unexpected.

Miss Alice Pollard has accepted a lucrative engagement with Messrs Edwardes and Wheeler, the well-known South African entrepreneurs, for a season of musical comedy, and left Sydney for South Africa by the Persic on May 12th.

Sir Westby Perceval, ex-Agent General for New Zealand, and director of the Union Bank of Australia, has been chosen as one of the directors of the new Anglo-Japanese Bank, which has just been formed, with a capital of £2,000,000.

New Zealand papers are asked to chronicle the death of Mr Thos. W T m. Kitt, F.R.N.S. Mr Kitt died suddenly at Guildford, Surrey, on Sunday, March 25th.

Mr Tom Pollard has received a good offer to take charge of a musical comedy company in America, but has decided to enter into no fresh engagements until after the completion of His Majesty's Theatre at Christehurch and the close of the New Zealand Exhibition.

Mr F. W. Mansfield, Chief Registrar of Electors, Wellington, who has had an attack of appendicitis, is a good deal better, and it is hoped he will be able to resume work next week.

The remains of the late Mr Frederick Bourne (son of an old Palmerston resident), who died at Winnipeg, Canada, were brought to New Zealand by his widow, and were interred last week in the Karori Cemetery. At the annual conversazione in connection with the Kopuaranga Presbyterian Church, which took place on Friday evening, Mr Bruce, the treasurer, said he had a pleasant duty to perform on behalf of the congregation. They had determined the long and willing services of the organist, Miss Stewart, should at last receive some recognition, and it was with great pleasure he fulfilled their wishes. He then presented Miss Stewart with a handsomely-bound Bible and a valuable gold bangle. Mr Gordon Stewart, on behalf of his sister, suitably returned thanks.

To-morrow Mr J. W. Marchant, who is retiring from the position of SurveyorGeneral, will be the recipient of a presentation from all the officers of the Lands ancl Survey Department in the colony. Hon, W. Hall-Jones, -Minister of Public Works, will make the presentation.
