HABITUAL CRIMINALS ACT.
Having a Good Effect in
Sydney
There has been a great decrease in house robberies and burglaries about Sydney for. some time past, and the police are convinced that this is due to the salutary influence of the Habitual Criminals Act. Their conclusions are based upon conversations they have had with " good " thieves now at large. They point out that since the passage of the new Act they are not " taking any," because as one man put it to a leading detective, they didn't mind being imprisoned if they ■were arrested, but they objected to being held for an indefinite period afterwards. The opinion among the police is that the exodus of daring criminals from other States has practically ceased, and that local experts, finding that their cases are likely to come within the four corners of the Act, are either lying low, or are migrating to spots where there is no Habitual Criminals Act.
