WOODVILLE NEWS.
(Special to 'Daily Times.)
For the first time, the December meeting of the Woodville Jockey Club was marred by wet weather.
The lawn, etc., was soon in a sea of mud, but the secretary, Mr E. J. Gothard, with his usual resource and thoughtfulness, had men at work spreading baled straw over the mud, and so enabling people to get about with some degree of comfort. A roller was kept going over the course immediately after each race, to make the track as safe as possible. In fact every possible thing was done for the convenience of patrons, and this fact was acknowledged by everyone.
Several improvements have been carried out since the February meeting, and had the weather been fine, the attendance would have exceeded that of last year. The jockey, Rowe, who was dangerously injured before the races, has been removed to the Hospital on the recommendation 'of Drs Mules and Dawson. His skull was split and the brains protruded, little hopes being entertained of his recovery. The new reading-room is approaching completion, and though, from an architect ural point of view, it is no beauty spot, it will be a valuable acquisition for the reading portion of our community. Mr and Mrs Bagiey leave us soon for their new home in Kumeroa, to which school Mr Bagiey has been appointed headmaster. Their" departure will be a great loss to Woodvillo in many ways.
Several buildings in course of erection prove the general prosperity of the town.
