Our sporting contributor writes : —

The Canterbury Jockey Club inaugurates its spring meeting to-morrow. The twentythird contest for the New Zealand Cup will take place, for which a field of fifteen horses have β^de'final payments. The Yaldhurst and Porirua stables have two representatives each in the event. To select a winner I shall pick Stead's Noctuifonn to win, with Paritutu to run'second, and Achilles third. Douche is the best of the outside division. I think the Stewards' Handicap will resolve itself into a contest between Munjeet, Sir Tristram and Solution, in which the latter will gain the advantage.

The Victorian Racing Club's spring meetmeeting commences at Flemington tomorrow. The Derby is the principal race to be run, and appears to be a good thing for Lady Wallace, although the chances of Charles Stuart (who is in much better form than when racing at Rand wick and Caulfield) and Bon Graf ton are not to be despised.
