CARTERTON NOTES.

(Special to Daily Times.)

The handsome picket v fence, recently erected round St. Mary's Church (Catholic), has just been painted, and now presents a very pretty appearance. The body of tho fence is painted a dark cream colour,' the posts are picked out in red and white, and the iron gates are picked out with green and gold. A' brass plate on one of the posts bears the name of the donor of the iron gates, and the names of the donor of the gate posts. The excavations for the local Borough Council's drainage works have nearly reached the centre of the town. Show stock, for the Wairarapa and East and A. Society's fixture, which takes place on Wednesday and Thursday, at Carterton, is beginning to arrive. An exciting runaway occurred here on afternoon. Mr D. Sullivan, carrier, driving a pair of horses in a brake, laden with cases of fruit, from the railway station, and, as he was turning the corner, his foot slipped off the brake and he overbalanced and fell on to the road. This frightened the horses, and they immediately bolted along Belvedere-road into Highstreet, and continued on to the south end of the town, where they were brought to a standstill. Through the fall, Mr Sullivan was much cut about on one of his hands, but no other damage was done. The local Brass Band, at a meeting, passed a hearty vote of thanks to all who assisted at the recent bazaar. A Belvedere fanner, Mr J. H. Angove, has recently purchased a splendid young Shorthorn bull. It was procured from a Feilding dairy farmer.

A painful accident befel a boy named Charles Ridgway, at the Belvedere school, on Friday night. Prior to thecommencement of the concert, this lad, with several others was playing on the swing. When on the swing himself, making it go very high, it is surmised that he became dazed, and losing his grip fell heavily to the ground. He was picked up in an unconscious state, and attended to by many willing hands, who found that the lad had received a nasty blow above the left eye. Dr. Johnston was sent for, and on arrival found the sufferer in a semiconscious state. The boy was removed to Mr F. Docherty's residence, where he was was carefully nursed, and had sufficiently recovered on Saturday morning to be able to proceed to his own home.

The annual concert and dance in aid of the Belvedere School Recreation Fund was held on Friday night, and proved a most successful affair. A lengthy programme was rendered, and items by the schoolchildren were especially good, and reflected credit on the headmaster, Mr McFarlane. and the assistant, Miss Butler. After the concert a dance was held, the music for which was supplied by Mr W. Heap. Extras were played by Mesdames Lorenzen, De Lacey, Misses L. Parker, and E. Sewell, and Mr F. Sewell.

A leak occurred in the high-pressure water main, in Belvedere-road, on Friday night, through, it is thought, a flaw in the pipe. The Borough overseer, Mr G. Canton, and Mr F. Jackson, assistant, worked until an early hour the following morning to temporarily repair it, and on Saturday morning a new piece of pipe was put in. This is the second leakage, the previous one being near the State school, some months ago.

At Clareville, on Saturday, the Carterton School played a cricket match with the Maori College. In their first innings the Maori College made 23 runs, and in the second innings 1G runs. Carterton School in the first innings made 30 runs, and 25 in the second, thus winning the game by 2G runs.

The total number of entries received for the forthcoming Show of the Wairarapa and East Coast P. and A. Society numbers 1144, an increase of 115 on the previous year. This does not include the produce entries.
