Meeting of Council.
The monthly meeting of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce was held in Lowes and lorns' farmers' room, yesterday afternoon. There were preseht -Messrs C. E. Daniell (chairman), Donald Donald, R. T. Holmes, E. E. Chamberlain, J. Elliott, J. B. Keith, M. Caselberg, W. B. Chennells, E. H. Waddington and J. R. Sharp. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs J. Graham, F. 11. Wood and J. D. Cruickshank. The Postmaster wrote with reference to ths complaint made with regard to laxity of attention at the telephone exchange. He stated that the matter would receive due attention. Members stated that there had been no improvement since the complaint had been made by the Chamber.
Mr Sharp stated that since the last meeting of tho Chambor he had been invited to visit the exchange, and had been very much surprised to find that the system employed was quite obsolete, and quito inadequate to meet requirements. He was quite satisfied that the fault was not with the attendants. Mr Nicholls had, however, given him to understand that it was proposed by the Department to make an up-to-date installation at an early date.
Mr Daniell said that if the system was wrong, they should agitate for something better. He moved that the letter from Mr Nicholls be acknowledged, and that it be pointed out that there had been no improvement since tho Chamber had drawn attention to the matter. The motion was seconded by Mr Keith ancl carried. A letter \was received from tho General Post Office Secretary, to the effect that the Department was not prepared to negotiate for a mail service between Masterton and Te Wharau, via Te Whiti, in connection with the coach service instituted by the Chamber, as the present services from Carterton to Te Wharau and Masterton to Te Whiti were sufficient to meet all requirements.—The letter was received.
The Secretary of the Technical School Board of Management made application for payment of the sum of (£ls Is Gd) voted by the Chamber for providing prizes for pupils attending the Technical School during the current year.
A quantity of literature was received from the Christchurch Exhibition Committee accompanied by a letter, suggesting that the Chamber should act as a local advisory committee.
Mr Daniell stated that when in Christchurch recently he had called on the Exhibition officials, ancl had suggested that they should communicate with the Chamber, with a view to their acting as representatives in this district.
Members considered the proposal a good one, and the opinion was expressed that the Chamber should do all in its power to assist the movement.
On the motion of Mr Donald, seconded by Mr Chennells, it was decided to act as a local Advisory Committee.
It was decided that the attention of the Borough Council be drawn to the urgent necessity for providing public conveniences in the town,
