There is some discussion at the present time over a proposed extension of Colestreet. The Cole estate trustees desire to extend it in the direction of Perry's land, but this would still leave it as a '' blind " street. The land on either side of the Cole estate belongs to' the Renall estate, and the Renall trustees arc understood to be anxious to construct a cross-line, intersecting the Cole estate, which would connect Pownall-street with Villa-street. The interests of the Cole Trustees and of the Renall Trustees do not quite run together as both are land-sellers, and the Borough Council is between two fires. In the public interests, an extension of Cole-street, provided it be not left as a " blind" street, would be advantageous and a road connecting Pow-nall-street with Villa street would be also beneficial. Any offer from either party to hand over to the Council a new thoroughfare should be acceptable, but the Council cannot be expected to adjust differences of interest between the two parties and should certainly not take over a " blind " street. If a difficulty arises between the Borough Council and the owners of the lands in question, the way out is provided under subsection 7 of clause 20 of " The Public Works Amendment Act, 1900." The " question or dispute" must be referred to the Minister of Lands, whose decision is final. In the present case there is an obvious reason for such a recourse, if the owners fail to agree.
