MUNICIPAL MATTERS.

The Works Committee.

Resignation of Cγ McEwen

At laM, night's meeting of the Masterton Borough Council, Cr McEWEN handed in his resignation as a member of the Works Committee. . The MAYOR, in moving that it be accepted with regret, stated that Cr McEwen had proved himself a most capable member of f the Committee, and, personally, he was very sorry to lose him. He had tried to persuade Cr McEwen to alter his mind, but had been unable to do so, the latter stating that he was unable to devote the time required to jjkarry out the duties. The motion was seconded by Cr PAUL ING, and carried. Cr EWINGTON moved that Cr Temple be appointed to lili the vacancy. Cr TEMPLE declined. Cr ETON nominated Cr Elliott. Cr ELLIOTT refused to accept the position, remarking the Committee of four members was quite suilicient. The MAYOR ruled that under the Standing Orders the vacancy must be filled and the number brought up to that originally appointed. Cr EWINGTON ridiculed the action of Cr Temple in criticising the Committee at each meeting and then refusing a seat on the Committee.

Cr MORRIS said he was pleased with the stand Cr Temple had taken. He would be more-useful as a ''free lance" than as a member of the Committee.

Cr FEIST moved that no addition be made to the Committee.

The MAYOR refused to accept the motion #and nominated Cr Morris, who also declined. Cr Foist was nominated, and he also declined i; most emphatically." Cr ETON considered the behaviour of the Councillors " strange—very strange," and thought they should be more interested in the affairs of the Borough than to act in the way they had done.

The MAYOR then ruled that as all the Councillors had declined to act, the present members of the Committee must continue to carry out the duties.
