Considerable progress has been made in cutting the new harbour channel. It is expected that an opening for steamers- of 200 ft will be available in six months from date.
Considerable indignation is expressed, locally, at the decision of the Government not to let the Provincial Hall in future for concerts, dances, etc. The action is due to the representations of the owners of the friendly societies , hall. Organised action is to be taken to appeal against the Government land valuations, which have raised values in some instances 120 per cent., while others have been lowered similarly. ; The death is announced of Mr Charles Thorpe, a Motueka pioneer, aged 84 years. Wellington, Last Night. Mr W. C. Kensington, Under-Secretary for Lands, has been appointed a member of the Land Purchase Commission. Archbishop Redwood, who returned, yesterday, from a trip to Europe, was, to-night, welcomed back to the Archdiosese and presented with an address and a purse of five hundred sovereigns.
