RECENT RIFLE MEETING.
High mechanical ingenuity and scientific apparatus were responsible (writes Christchurch Truth) for even more beautiful accuracy than usual at the Trentham meeting this year. The soldiers of the King in these parts are becoming so deadly with a musket that under special conditions they can't miss. All that is required is that the enemy shall stand rigidly still at a carefully measured range, and with a conspicuous white patch over its heart, that there should be comfortable, elevated butts for the Antipodian warrior to lie down on, that plenty of time should be allowed him to adjust Ms wind gauges and his vernier, and stick up his direction flags, and that suitable opportunities should be allowed him to test the conditions with sighters. This is the sort of thing they teach at Trentham, and any decent sporting enemy would, of course, conform to the conditions.
