THE GUESTS' ERROR.
Sir Arthur Fairbahn, third baronet of Ardwick, in the county of Lancaster, has the distinction of being the only owner of an hereditary title who is deaf and dumb (says Cassell's).
One time a friend asked Sir Arthur -to dine, and subsequently, on communing with himself, came to the conclusion that he would rather have some others to assist him at his club in entertaining his guest, being himself by no means as rapid a writer as ha would wish, and more fluent of . speech than of crayon. He therefore vited two friends to dine with him at club, telling each of them that he had also invited Sir Arthur, who was deaf and dumb.
The host picked up the latter, whom he drove to his club ; and entering the private room, which he had bespoken for the occasion, was vastly amused (as was Fairbairn) who delights to tell the story) aL- -.-«-a> seeing each guest addressing the other if laboriously on their fingers, both of ""*»...... under the supposition that the osher was Sir Arthur.
