A RECENT WAIRARAPA MARRIAGE.

A Native Tribute.

A party of Europeans and Maoris assembled, on Saturday evening, at the residence of Mr Tawhaio Te Tau, Kurupuui, for the purpose of celebrating, in Native fashion, a recent marriage. It appears that on the birth, at Brancepeth, of Mr Hugh H. Beetham's eldest daughter, the resident Natives were asked to suggest a name for the new arrival, with the result that " Raurauhanga " was chosen. Her marriage took place on November 30th, at Wellington, when Mr Te Huki, on behalf of the East Coast Natives, made some suitable presentations to the bride. In recognition of the good feeling, a portion of the wedding cake was sent to the contributors of the marriage gifts, and to distribute the cake was the object of the assemblage. The company, numbering over a score, included, Mr, Mrs and Miss Ho£;g, the Misses Renall, Mr Wainohu, and a number of others, and most of them being musically inclined, comprising instrumentalists and vocalists, a most enjoyable evening was the result. In the course of the festivities, Mr Te Huki gave a fine recital relating to the ancestry of the owners of the young lady's name, whose marriage the company was celebrating. The health of Mr and Mrs Te Tau was enthusiastically honoured, and a limited, but most interesting, halta, with quite a number of oake walks, filled up a programme which had to terminate abruptly at midnight.
