THE PREMIER ON THE WEST COAST.

(By Telegraph — Press Association} Hokitika, This Day.

The Premier, replying to a deputation, said it was necessary for him to return to Wellington at once, owing to important duties, including setting-up the Land and other Commissions.

The Government, he said, intended to ask Parliament next session for a special grant to carry telephones to tbe backblocks.

The Midland Railway should, he said, have been completed five or six years ago, and the Colony had been retarded for years by delay in its completion. The construction of the line should stand on an equal footing with the North Island Trunk Line.
